about

“We Go On” [EP]

In September 2020, James, Andrew, Jon, Joe, and I set up camp in the Pomarico Family Basement for a weekend of basic tracking. Despite being set up socially-distant, with masks on, I was determined to not make a pandemic record. In fact, I was on-record in some interviews saying specifically that I didn’t want to make ‘that’ record. It wasn’t interesting to me. I purposefully didn’t make Seventh Son masks as merch because I was weary of trying to profit from the situation we found ourselves in. I am always working on new songs, and the batch we were approaching this weekend went back to the previous year, and were all started prior to the pandemic. In hindsight, it is obvious that the state of the world definitely had an effect on these recordings- from the topics of the lyrics and the anger in the playing, to the very literal logistics of needing to set up 6 feet apart while tracking, and countless ‘Zoom’ mixing sessions and meetings.
In a very dark time for many of us, this record gave us something to work on and look forward to. The songs were written and performed quickly, which was a choice on my part, much to the chagrin of the band and Joe at times. I was trying to capture a recording of us on our toes, playing our feelings out in real time in that basement. We spent a lot of time on overdubs and mixing choices- really wanting to nail the production, while trying to keep it raw and balance “less is more” with “wall of sound”. Joe Pom did a countless number of remixes, while the band listened and gave notes, and we asked our friends Cooper Davis, Matthew Koerner, Jon Alba, Zach Kornhauser, Doug Gallo, and more for their feedback and insight. Thank you, pals.
I didn’t know if we were doing singles, an EP, or the beginning of a longer project. We found that the 5 songs we cut that weekend really packed a punch for 20 minutes. I felt they could stand up as a record on their own, and figuring out what would be considered ‘singles’ was going to be tough, which was a great problem.
