“Take What You Can Get” is our ode to the great Jersey rockers, and blue-collar work ethics and culture, and also a scathing review of capitalism. We wanted to show the dichotomy between the Springsteen “Factory” workers, and the new generation’s 9-5 and 5-9 need to monetize anything and everything in order to make rent. It channels our love of Springsteen, The Bouncing Souls, Gaslight Anthem, and spins it with some millennial anger. Taking what we can get in this world, and being grateful for what we do have, while recognizing that we all can do more for those less fortunate than us. Rock n Roll Robin Hood.
lyrics
“Take What You Can Get”
B. Mahoney, A. Saul, J. McIntosh, J. Chang-Soon
Working 9-5 on a production line
I hate everything I make
When its closing time
Follow the neon lights to the top shelf
And I crawl in deep
Everyone needs a fix
Everyone is a bitch
For something coffee booze or nicotine
Whatever pumps adrenaline or endorphins yeah
Hurry up and wait
Take what you can get (give something back)
Take what you can get (and we’ll keep the rest)
All of these times are driving me wild and I’m Heading down the coast losing track of the miles
Take what you can get
Hey hey get ya thru the day
Working 9-9 in this dead end life
I hate everything I say
Like a flick of the switch
Off like a trailer hitch
Just get out of your own way
“We’ve known darkness before
And we will know it again, Lenore”
Reflect but keep moving forward
To find something that is worth living for
In the back of a closing store
Hurry up and wait
Take what you can get (give something back)
Take what you can get (and we’ll keep the rest)
All of these times are driving me wild and I’m Heading down the coast losing track of the miles
Take what you can get
Hey hey get ya thru the day

These recordings have a rough- hewn, almost demo-ish quality, but instead of detracting it adds to their charm. Like a concert in your living room, these wonderful songs are intimate and full of small surprises. Lilly Hiatt is a terrific artist, and the method/circumstances of the recording don't matter because her talent always shines. Don't sleep on this one. brooklynboy
